about Adrienne S. Chan, Ph.D.
Adrienne Chan has a doctorate from the University of Kent at Canterbury, England, in the area
of adult & continuing education, with a focus on Diversity and Institutional Change. She also
holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (University of Victoria), and a Masters of Social Work
degree (University of B.C.). For over fifteen years Adrienne has worked as a trainer, instructor,
researcher, community and adult educator.
Adrienne has been working actively in the area of diversity, equity, cross cultural understanding
and harassment for over ten years. She has delivered training, instruction and workshops, written
curriculum, coordinated instruction and curriculum projects. Adrienne was one of the founding
members of the Multicultural Education Consortium of School Districts and Colleges (formerly
the Lower Mainland Multicultural Education Consortium, 1990). The Consortium works with
educational institutions through training, strategic planning, policy development and consultation
to implement and sustain organizational change in the areas of multiculturalism, anti-racism and
diversity.
Adrienne has worked extensively with non-profit agencies, municipalities, hospitals, health
boards, universities, colleges, institutes, school districts and crown corporations in the areas of
diversity, race relations, planning and organizational change. Her particular emphasis is on
training, organizational change, and organizational development as the means for creating more
inclusive and diverse organizations. Her work includes numerous curricula, reports, needs
assessments, evaluations, policies, and strategic planning documents. She has worked
extensively with managers and administrators, as well as line-staff, faculty and union
representatives.
Adrienne worked with The Hastings Institute, City of Vancouver (1993-1994) as a coordinator/
trainer in diversity, equity and harassment and the University of British Columbia (1996-1997)
as an Equity Advisor, dealing with harassment complaints, delivering education and awareness
workshops.
Adrienne was a Post-doctoral Fellow (2001-2004) at the University of British Columbia, Department of Educational Studies, Centre for Policy Studies in Higher Education and Training (CHET). Adrienne has an appointment with CHET as an Adjunct Professor (2005-2010)
In 2004, Adrienne joined the faculty at the School of Social Work and Human
Services at University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV), Abbotsford, BC.

In June 2005, Adrienne was elected as Chair for the Standing Committee on Racial,
Ethnic and Cultural Issues at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association
of Schools of Social Work (CASSW), at Kings University College, University
of Western Ontario (London, Ontario). The appointment continues to June 2008.
Adrienne has a strong commitment to social issues. She believes that education is one of the
primary forces in influencing social change.
Adrienne is a third generation Chinese-Canadian. She was born and raised in Victoria, B.C. Canada
